Hero Journal ("we", "our", "the app") is operated by Alternate Overload. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

1. What We Collect

Email address — used to create your account and send magic link login emails.
Journal entries — the text you write in response to daily prompts.
App usage data — pages completed, streaks, chapter progress, and highlights.
Payment information — subscription status is managed through Stripe. We do not store your credit card details directly; Stripe handles all payment processing.

2. How We Use Your Data

Account authentication — your email is used to send passwordless login links via Resend.
Core app functionality — your journal entries and progress data are stored so you can access them across devices.
AI coaching — when you use the AI coach feature, your journal entries are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate personalised responses. Anthropic does not use this data to train their models.
Email reminders — if enabled, we send daily journaling reminders to your email address.

Important: Your journal entries are processed by Anthropic's Claude AI to power the coaching feature. This means your entries are transmitted to Anthropic's servers when you interact with the AI coach. Anthropic's data handling is governed by their privacy policy.

3. Data Storage

Your data is stored on Cloudflare's infrastructure (Cloudflare D1 database and Cloudflare Workers). All data is encrypted in transit via HTTPS. Your journal entries are stored as plain text in our database and are not end-to-end encrypted.

4. Data Sharing

We do not sell your data. We do not share your data with third parties for advertising purposes. Your data is only shared with the following service providers as necessary to operate the app:

Anthropic — processes journal entries for AI coaching responses.
Stripe — processes subscription payments.
Resend — sends authentication and reminder emails.
Cloudflare — hosts the app and stores your data.

5. Your Rights

You can request the following at any time by emailing us:

Access — request a copy of all data we hold about you.
Deletion — request that we permanently delete your account and all associated data.
Correction — request correction of any inaccurate data.

6. Data Retention

Your data is retained for as long as your account is active. If you request deletion, we will remove your data from our systems within 30 days. Backups may retain data for up to an additional 30 days before being purged.

7. Children's Privacy

Hero Journal is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you via email or an in-app notice. The "last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
